Digital instruments set new standards in measurement uncertainty and provide a superior gold standard for in-house calibrations.
Spectrum Detector, Inc., a leading manufacturer of standard and custom detectors, electronics and instruments for measuring optical power and energy, today introduced the TRAP Series, a revolutionary series of digital radiometers and joulemeters that set new standards in measurement uncertainty: <1% on multiple points across the spectrum. The systems are based on "wedge" TRAP concepts pioneered at NIST Boulder - where the technology plays a critical role in NIST spectral calibration transfer standards. Equally unique is the TRAP Series' configuration - the entire system is contained within a single, compact, USB-powered probe housing. The user simply connects the probe to a PC via the USB port and begins measuring using powerful Labview software. The TRAP series is ideal for any ultra-precise measurement application, and provides a NIST-level gold standard for in-house calibrations.
The TRAP consists of a large-area black pyroelectric detector opposite a large-area broadband mirror in a 15° wedge configuration. The wedge configuration is designed so that 99% of the light passing through the 5 mm aperture is absorbed and measured. This means the spectral response from 0.25 to 15 µm is flat to 1% or better.

"It's incredibly useful in the lab - perfect for the user that's serious about optical measurements and optical calibrations. In fact, it's literally like ready access to NIST standards in-house. For example, if a user gets varying results between optical power meters when measuring a single source, he can employ an SPT-DR-TRAP system as an absolute standard. This way, he can correlate his meters to the TRAP system and minimize the measurement uncertainty. These new TRAP instruments provide a convenient and timely solution to in-house optical calibration needs - and time is money."
The digital TRAP Series is available in radiometer or joulemeter configurations. The Model SPT-DR-TRAP is a radiometric model with measurement performance from 20 µW to 200 mW FS, with minimum resolution of 50 nW. The Model SPT-DJ-TRAP delivers joulemeter measurement performance from 2 µJ to 2 mJ, with minimum resolution of 100 nJ. Included with all systems is full featured, executable LabView applications software that provides single and dual-channel measurement capability, powerful automation routines and sophisticated data collection, statistics and graphic presentation.
Analog TRAP instrumentation is also available, optimized for use with oscilloscopes and lock-in amplifiers. Choose from a variety of radiometer and joulemeter configurations.
